How many domain extensions to purchase?

topic posted Wed, July 18, 2007 - 10:17 AM by  Om Shiva
i'm about to purchase my domain name.
of course it gives me the option to purchase the extensions .net, .biz, .org, etc. as well.

i know there is relevance to purchasing all of these to make sure no one else uses a version of my .com and dilutes the traffic going in my direction, make sure no one goes to the same name under another extension mistakenly, etc.

but really, how many of these should i purchase?
i am a designer by trade.
its not that expensive to purchase all the extensions but why spend more money that is really necessary, right?

thanks in advance for your feedback!
this will be helpful info for my clients as well.

I'm sure others here will jump in with their $.02, but when I was doing something similar I lined up
the .com, .net, and .org domains. I think those are probably the most common, or most likely ones to
be searched for, but I guess a lot of it depends on the nature of the business/web site and how likely is
it to be searched for under a .biz or some of the newer domains...

Like you said, there is a certain cost associated with purchasing the domain names, even though it is minimal in most cases...where do you stop?

is your domain a business? If so purchase all of them and have them redirect to your main site. Also think of common mistypings of your domain and do the same w/them. This way even if they keyboard stutter they can get to you. Have the com as your main domain and the rest redirect to it.
